October is Fire Prevention Month

October is fire prevention month! This is the time each year when fire departments stop at elementary schools and remind kids not to play with fire.

But the lessons learned from those brave firefighters may often be forgotten once we grow up and buy a home.

October is a great time to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, recharge or purchase fire extinguishers for the home, ensure each bedroom has an egress for fire-fighters, and have a licensed HVAC professional check the pilot light on your furnace.

Spend a night around the table making a family emergency plan, your local fire department would be happy to help with it.

With more and more electrical appliances, computers, and games we bring into our homes, it's important we don't overload the electrical systems. Have an electrical contractor check to ensure your electrical system is safe and up to code.

Remember, while October is fire prevention month, thinking about fire prevention and safety should be a 12 month event.
